Prince’s Trust TEAM – Katie’s Journey

Eleven short weeks ago Katie had trouble even leaving her bedroom. After struggling with various mental health issues, and being out of employment or education for two years, her confidence was at an all-time low.

Fast forward a couple of months and Katie’s journey is almost complete. She graduates from the Foundation’s Prince’s Trust TEAM programme next week and with her confidence rising, her future prospects are looking bright. She’s finally back at work, and starting her new job in June.

The Prince’s Trust TEAM initiative aims to take young people aged 16-25 who are out of work and education, and help them meet new people, gain qualifications, improve their communication skills, and build their confidence.

After taking part in a week long, team building residential trip with our other TEAM participants – which included raft building, caving, and fire building – as well as helping out with a community garden project, focus shifted to employment opportunities

Through the Prince’s Trust programme, Katie was introduced to Newcastle United Foundation’s Employability team who helped her with her CV and honing her interview skills. As a result, Katie gained valuable work experience in retail, as well as getting the opportunity to shadow behind the scenes at Northern Stage.

All her experiences with the Foundation and Prince’s Trust came together as she successfully secured her first job in two years – working on behalf of John Lewis at Sitel’s Newcastle call centre!

Lee Smith, Prince’s Trust Team Co-ordinator at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “Having worked with Katie since she first joined the TEAM programme, seeing how far she has come in just 11 weeks has been incredible.

“Katie has taken everything the programme has thrown at her into her stride and to see her confidence and skills grow to the point where she has now secured employment, it’s a testament to the fantastic work that she, and the rest of our participants have put into the course.”

Speaking about her experiences with the TEAM programme Katie said: “This course has been absolutely fantastic for me. Lee and the rest of the Foundation staff were so welcoming and I can’t thank them enough for all the help they’ve throughout the weeks.

“I’ve learnt so much from the Prince’s Trust programme and it’s amazing how far we’ve all come in such a short time. I can’t wait to take all the skills I’ve picked up during my time here into my new job in June!”
