Ruby's Story: 'There's always something better coming'

As a young carer, Ruby is responsible for supporting her family and balances commitments at home alongside her own school studies.

As a young carer, Ruby is responsible for supporting her family and balances commitments at home alongside her own school studies.

She found the transition from primary to secondary school particularly challenging and dealt with debilitating social anxiety – her resilience fell away, with her school attendance at just 89 per cent.

Foundation staff in Ruby’s school knew she would benefit from extra support, working in small groups in the Foundation’s designated classroom.

Ruby gradually found her voice, delivering young carer presentations in class and assemblies, also using British Sign Language to celebrate diversity week.

The intervention has created a lasting impact on Ruby’s behaviour and mental wellbeing, boosting her attendance and helping her enjoy education once more.

Support from the Premier League and Professional Footballer’s Association, administered through the Premier League Charitable Fund, enables Newcastle United Foundation to create life-changing opportunities for young people who have been identified by their schools as needing extra support to engage with activities, helping them to develop the personal skills and positive attitudes needed to succeed in life.

If you don't step out of your comfort zone, I think you've got a pretty boring life
