Zumtobel City Win Foundation Cup 2018

Zumtobel City have won the Foundation Cup 2018, beating Parkdean Resorts on penalties after the final finished 1-1.

The corporate tournament, part of Newcastle United Foundation’s annual Play on the Pitch fundraising day at St. James’ Park, saw 16 teams battle it out to take home the prestigious trophy.

In a hotly contested encounter, Zumtobel took an early lead in the final, capitalising on a rare Parkdean Resorts mistake to stroke home with just ten seconds on the clock.

Despite numerous chances for both sides the game and the trophy seemed to be in Zumtobel’s hands. Step up Parkdean Resorts Number 5, who secured his Man of the Match status, striking a thunderbolt into the top corner of the net with almost the last kick of the game.

A nervous penalty shootout followed with both teams scoring four out of four each. Unfortunately though, after Zumtobel City dispatched their fifth spot kick, Parkdean Resorts finally succumbed to the pressure missing their final penalty and sparking jubilant scenes amongst the Zumtobel squad.

The Cup wasn’t the only silverware up for grabs on the day either. Teams who did not make it out of the group stages were entered into the Foundation Plate. The prize was eventually won by Reece Group, beating a strong Pulsant side in the final.

Yvette Thompson, Communications and Events Manager at Newcastle United Foundation said: “I’d like to thank all of the companies who supported us for making the Foundation Cup a stand out event in our fundraising calendar.  All of the teams were really competitive and played the games in the right spirit.

“Huge congratulations to Zumtobel Group for taking the trophy home for a second successive year. I’d like to that Molson Coors for sponsoring the post match drinks.  Funds raised from the day will support our community projects and we’re looking forward to annoncing the fundraising total in due course.”
