Top Learner Earns Wonga Mascot Reward

Club sponsor, Wonga, rewarded Family Learning student as their mascot for the Barclay’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea last Saturday.

Lewis Forster, aged six from Gateshead, was given the once in a lifetime opportunity to run out with the Newcastle United first team, after standing out as ‘top student’ from his Family Football school session.

Family Football, an afterschool initiative run by Newcastle United Foundation and funded by the Big Lottery Fund and Premier League, is a six week programme that engages families in a fun based learning environment. The programme is run in 50 schools each year, aimed at creating stronger, healthier families to give adults the confidence to progress onto further learning.

Jack, who attends Gateshead based Carr Hill Primary School, was picked out as ‘outstanding learner of the course’. His mum Donna, spoke about the sessions:

“Myself and Lewis really enjoyed the Family Football sessions. I enjoyed learning the way my son works at maths at school to how I was taught it also let me help him with his homework as I had a better understanding.”

“Lewis and myself are very competitive so we loved working together as a team and winning. It’s really helped us both and we have enjoyed bonding together.”

Lewis was able to run out on to the hallowed turf on Saturday, in which the game resulted in a Newcastle United win over Chelsea.
