Steve Harper In Surprise Visit To Soccer School

Newcastle United Foundation Patron, and former Newcastle United Goalkeeper, Steve Harper paid a surprise visit to one of our soccer schools in Cramlington today.

Steve dropped in to the Perfect your Position course specialising in goalkeeping to share some of his tips and on the field experiences. He also gave away three pairs of his own goalkeeping gloves and presented the attendees with their participation medals.

The players, age 11-15, were grouped according to their preferred playing position and learnt about the role of either Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder or Attacker from our experienced UEFA B Licence coaches.

Sessions covered a different aspect each day, working in their units in the morning, and came together in the afternoon to play in matches which were set to challenge the players understanding of the morning’s training.

Tony Threlfall, Football Development Officer at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “We wanted to deliver a course that was challenging with a focus on broadening the players’ knowledge in a concentrated period. It’s been a fantastic week – we’ve seen a huge improvement in the players understanding of their preferred roles within a team. It was great that Steve took the time to come and see some of the region’s young goalkeeping talent – it was a great surprise for the players and an unexpected reward for their hard work!”

Newcastle Patron Steve Harper added: “It was great to see the youngsters out there training hard and to see their passion for the game! They had some great questions about technique and teamwork so you can see they’ve been very quick to process what they’ve learnt in the sessions. Well done to all the players – it was great to see you out there playing. Your hard work has definitely paid off!”

There is still time to book for week’s 5 and 6 of the Foundation’s Summer Schools. For more information, and course venues, please click here.
