Premier League 4 Sport’s Young Badminton Star Scoops ‘Most Promising’ Award

Newcastle United Foundation attendee, Alex Sutherland was recently awarded The Most Promising under 12 Boy Badminton Player in Northumberland – the youngest person ever to win the award!

Alex, 8 from Newcastle, was invited to the North Tyneside Council offices to pick up his award, which was introduced by Councillor John Carter back in 2003.

The student from Appletree Gardens First School, was introduced to badminton through his brother Sean, who attends a Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) satellite club at Marden Bridge Middle School. Alex automatically portrayed an interest and it soon became clear that he was a natural with the badminton racket.

Coach, Steve Sharp recognised Alex’s talent and invited him to be part of the North Tyneside Talent squad that trains at John Spence Community High School on a weekly basis.

The eight- year old recently took part in the Super Series competition that took place at the Tyneside Badminton Centre, and will also be competing in the junior restricted championships for under 13’s in the near future.

Alex is a regular attendee at PL4S satellite clubs and attends badminton holiday courses that are run by Newcastle United Foundation in conjunction with the Premier League’s 4 Sport campaign –An innovative project which started in September 2009 and has helped tens of thousands of young people get involved in sport in their local community.

Alex spoke of his nomination:

“I love playing badminton and I am really excited about the competitions that I am going to be entering!

“I would love to win The Most Promising Under 12 Boy Badminton Player in Northumberland again next year but I know this will be tough.”

Alex’s mother, Jo Sutherland added:

“Alex loves to take part in any sport so having found the he likes badminton was notunexpected.

His enthusiasm for the game was a bit of a shock as we thought his main passion was football, but he loves attending the holiday courses and training with (coach) Steve which has helped him come on leaps and bounds over the last few months!”
