Michael Carrick praises Newcastle United Foundation partnership helping hundreds of youngsters

Hundreds of children and teenagers from disadvantaged communities are returning to free sports and education opportunities provided by two charities dedicated to inspiring the next generation.

A long-running partnership between Newcastle United Foundation and Michael Carrick Foundation sees free weekly football sessions offered in Newcastle and North Tyneside for young people aged eight to 18.

Around 80 youngsters arrive week after week to learn, play, socialise and exercise in a supervised and safe environment at Carrick’s Kicks sessions delivered by Newcastle United Foundation coaches.

Michael Carrick Foundation Trustees, Graeme and Kay Carrick, saw first-hand how young people are motivated and inspired at The Parks, in North Shields, as they met with participants and staff there in October.

The pair were on hand to help Foundation staff give away Newcastle United kit, match tickets and merchandise to participants making progress at their sessions.

Lee Scott, Newcastle United Foundation Premier League Kicks Coordinator, said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Graeme and Kay along to one of our sessions and for them to meet the young people our charities are helping to create a brighter future for.

“Newcastle United Foundation really couldn’t provide these life changing opportunities for free without the vital support and funding from the Michael Carrick Foundation and thanks to them, we’ve registered more than 1,000 attendances at Carrick’s Kicks over the last 12 months.”

He added: “Our coaching team recently heard from the grandmother of a young man who has been coming along to Kicks for two years and absolutely loves his Friday nights at The Parks.

“His grandmother told us how impressed she is with the quality of every single session and was surprised to find that our Foundation relies on grants and donations to keep our programmes going.

“Our work with Michael Carrick Foundation is so important and we look forward to changing more lives with them at Kicks in Byker and The Parks for a long time to come.”

Michael Carrick, the Wallsend-born midfielder turned first team coach at Manchester United, founded Michael Carrick Foundation in 2017, to create safe spaces and empowering opportunities for deprived youngsters living in Greater Manchester and Tyne and Wear.

He said: “As a Foundation, we want to create empowering opportunities where youngsters can feel safe, valued and inspired, and our partnership with Newcastle United Foundation enables us to do just that.

“To see our participants engaging in sessions every week is fantastic. These sessions not only provide them with a safe place to enjoy sport, but also gives them the chance to meet new friends and our coaches are brilliant role models too.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Newcastle United Foundation and are looking forward to continuing to make an impact together.”

In December 2020 – at a time when the pandemic kept many families apart – the charities united to deliver hundreds of Newcastle United goodies, festive treats, and games to brighten young people’s lives at Christmas time in Newcastle and North Tyneside.

Using football to inspire young people, Kicks also provides opportunities for eight to 18-year-olds to join in with constructive activities, to learn leadership skills and to complete qualifications that will support them in their future.

The programme also aims to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour by working with neighbourhood police officers, breaking down stigmas and obstacles between the police and younger generations.
