Make a difference with Newcastle United Foundation at the Great North Run Reimagined
Newcastle United Foundation is challenging its loyal supporters to make a difference during a difficult year for all of us by taking on the Great North Run Reimagined to keep vital charity work going.
As the official charity of Newcastle United, the organisation relies on the generosity of Geordies, passionate about their club, their community and their home in the North East.
It is this kindness the Foundation is calling on to urge would-be runners to lace up their trainers, create their own start line and fundraise for Newcastle United Foundation at the Great North Run Reimagined.
Earlier this year, the famous 13.1-mile half-marathon was cancelled in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But The Great Run Company has created alternative ways to do something amazing for yourself and the charities you support by staging a summer of virtual running campaigns, including the official Virtual Great North Run.
Gill Keeka, Newcastle United Foundation Development Manager, said: “We were incredibly lucky to have a group of runners committed to taking on the Great North Run this year for our charity and looking to fundraise thousands of pounds in the process.
“Sadly, the Great North Run being cancelled called time on that, however we are really hopeful we can encourage as many runners as possible to challenge themselves to complete the Virtual Great North Run on 13 September.
“Everyone in the North East knows how important the event is to the region and what a big day it is for runners, spectators, their families and friends.
“It’s a very important day to charities like ours too, who are fortunate to have wonderful people fundraising for us.
“We hope people in the North East feel inspired to sign up to the first ever Virtual Great North Run to experience the race like never before and fundraising for the Foundation’s United As One work in the process.”
The United As One project has seen Foundation staff redeployed during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping the most vulnerable in our region.
Actions we are taking include delivering food parcels to families in poverty, telephoning isolated elderly participants and providing PE lessons for children of key workers in schools.
By fundraising for Newcastle United Foundation, the charity can continue its outreach work in the community, building a future together inclusive of all ages, ability, ethnicity, faith, gender and sexuality.
The Foundation is also offering runners who fundraise over £100 the chance to win a football signed by the Newcastle United first-team!
The race will also offer runners a unique experience through app provider ViRACE, creating an innovative virtual experience with audio clips so that participants hear the sounds of the Great North Run, providing as close an experience as possible to the real event.
The Great Run Company will mimic a race format so that all runners start their virtual Great North Run at the same time and complete the same 13.1 mile distance. Runners will be tracked throughout the virtual race and will be able to view results after the race has finished
Entries will open on the Great Run website from 10am on Monday 3 August. To enter or for more information, visit greatrun.org
