Magpies Legend Supports Tesco Bank Junior Players

Newcastle United goalkeeping legend, Steve Harper, joined over 50 primary school pupils from the Newcastle area taking part in a Tesco Bank Junior Players football event led by Newcastle United Foundation.

Harper, who is Newcastle United’s longest serving player and is currently an academy goalkeeping coach with the club, took part in the action and encouraged some lucky pupils to take a shot at him in goal.

Tesco Bank Junior Players is a flagship community coaching programme jointly led by the Newcastle United Foundation, the Foundation of Light and the Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation and gives school children in the region the opportunity to take part in physical activity and receive expert tuition from highly qualified coaches. This unique programme is first time three Foundations have collaborated on such a project.

Speaking about the event, Steve Harper said:

“Today was a brilliant example of how important programmes like Tesco Bank Junior Players are to the development of the sport but also in encouraging children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. There was some great skills on show from the pupils, but more importantly you could see the enjoyment on the faces of all the pupils as they were running about.”

Adele Mills, Tesco Bank Senior Community Investment Manager, said:

“This programme is all about using the power of sport to get children fit and active and we’re delighted to support such an initiative. And it’s even more exciting when we can bring legends along such as Steve. Newcastle United Foundation delivers hugely enjoyable activities and we look forward to providing more of these with all three partners.”

Kate Bradley, Head of Newcastle United Foundation, added:

“Tesco Bank Junior Players is giving thousands of children the chance to get involved in sport and develop their skills. Today’s festival is a fantastic opportunity for schools we are engaged with to bring teams who have shown real enthusiasm in their weekly sessions to play against their peers. The atmosphere here today was fantastic, it’s great to see so many children enjoying the programme – I’d like to thank Tesco Bank for their support, and Foundation Patron Steve Harper for coming along and giving the children a few tips!”
