Magpies Duo Celebrate Families’ Achievements

Over 600 people attended Newcastle United Foundation’s fifth annual Family Football celebration event.

Sammy Ameobi and Jack Colback joined the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Deputy Lord Mayor of Gateshead and Vera Baird, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria Police to celebrate the achievements of local families.

Over the past 12 months, the Foundation has delivered 50 Family Football Courses in local schools and community venues, using the power of football to promote enjoyment in learning. A total of 1200 people completed a course and a further 1100 people took part in family learning workshops.

Each child attending received a certificate from Sammy and Jack before a series of awards were presented by the VIP guests. Awards were presented to;

Young Learner of the Year – Leon Bell from Preston Grange primary School
Adult Learner of the Year – Cheryl Hill, St John’s Primary School
School of the Year – Windy Nook Primary School
Family Learners of the Year – Mitchinson Familiy, Thomas Bewick School

On winning her award, Cheryl said;

“I really can’t believe that I was chosen. The course I did with Mark was brilliant and then being allowed to volunteer was even better. I would recommend this course to anybody with children.”

Project Coordinator, Mark Bertram said:

“This is our fifth Family Football Celebration event and this years’ was bigger and better than ever before. Our thanks this year go to Newcastle City Learning, Gateshead Council and North Tyneside Council, the Big Lottery Fund and Premier League Charitable Fund plus every school, teacher and family who have participated this year.”

Family Football uses the power of football to bring families together to enjoy learning. The project has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund since 2009 with support from the Premier League since 2013.
