Why I’m Running The GNR: Janine’s Story

With the Great North Run only a few weeks away, Newcastle United Foundation is taking a look at some of the inspiring people who are taking on the challenge to raise funds to support our projects…

“My name is Janine Calkin and I am running the Great North Run to raise funds for a charity that means a lot to me – Newcastle United Foundation.”

Janine’s son, Sam, has been involved with the Foundation for a number of years, frequently attending our disability football sessions.

Sam suffers from learning difficulties and has a full statement of educational needs and was removed from mainstream school at an early age. His passion has always been, and continues to be football.

Last month, he was invited to represent the Foundation as part of our team for the Costa Blanca Cup in Spain, an international competition which brought together pan-disability teams from all over Europe to fight it out for the top prize.

Not only did the Foundation team put in a series of strong performances in the competition – they went on to win the whole thing!

“Sam really enjoyed his time in Spain playing for the Foundation. He was quite confident that they were going to win!”

Inspired by her son’s sporting success, Janine has been training hard for a medal of her own when she runs the GNR in September.

“I say running, let’s be honest although I’ll do my very best, I imagine there will be a lot of red-faced panting and clutching my thighs as I stumble around the route!”

You can support Janine and Newcastle United Foundation on her JustGiving page here!
