Gentoo Tolent Supports Foundation Employability

Two budding construction workers have been given the chance of work experience on a live construction site thanks to a new partnership between Gentoo Tolent and Newcastle United Foundation.

Gentoo Tolent is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tolent Construction and provides a wide range of construction services including new build social and private housing developments.

Newcastle United Foundation is an independent registered charity supported by Newcastle United Football Club aiming to take the club into the local community to use the local passion for football to make a difference.  The relationship between the organisations is a result of Gentoo Tolent’s commitment to the Foundation’s Talent Match and Premier League Works Employability programmes as an Employability Partner, offering work experience and support to young people the Foundation is supporting in their transition into work, education or training.

John Hardy (21) and David Kennedy (18) from the Foundation will be gaining experience as general labourers on the site at The Malings in Ouseburn which consists of 61 houses and apartments for client Carillion-Igloo, with the next phase of 17 due for completion in February 2017.

John has always had an interest in working with his hands and said “When I was young I always enjoyed helping my granddad and dad in the garage fixing things so knew that a career working with my hands was for me.

It’s great that I’ve been given the chance of this work experience, everyone on site has been really friendly and helpful and I hope that the time spent here will hold me in good stead for getting permanent employment”.

David Dixon, Head of Customer Services at Gentoo Tolent said “We are committed to making a difference to the communities that we work in, and developing a fantastic new relationship with the Newcastle United Foundation.

“We are delighted to be able to give John and David some valuable experience of working in construction and hope that this will encourage their interest in a career in the construction industry in the future”.

Lewis Shields, Project Officer at Newcastle United Foundation, said “It was fantastic to come down and see the work David and John have done on site – I was really impressed!  We really appreciate the support that Gentoo Tolent have given us in offering work experience to these young people that are passionate about embarking on a career in construction. We’re very much looking forward to working alongside Gentoo Tolent with future cohorts.”
