Foundation Shows Appreciation Of Ball Boy And Girl Supervisors

Newcastle United Foundation recently invited our volunteer Ball Boy and Ball Girl supervisors to enjoy hospitality at a Newcastle United fixture in recognition of their hugely valued support over the season.

Gail Stewart, a teacher at Broadwood Primary School in Newcastle, has supervised the ball boys and girls on a match day at St James’ Park for 16 years with Sue Lawrence, a teacher at Emmaville Primary School in Gateshead, having taken on the role for an amazing 20 years.

Past players that have been ball boys under the pair’s supervision include Steven Taylor, Sammy Ameobi and Andy Carroll.

Gail said “I love working at the game on a match day and being part of the set up, it is great to see so many young children get the opportunity to be a ball ball or girl as it gives them the chance to see their heroes in action, not to mention watch the game from the best seat in the stadium! To watch a match from the hospitality box was fantastic and an experience I will never forget.”

Sue added:  “It was fantastic watching the game from the Foundation box, it was very strange to get a birds view of the game instead of being pitch side worrying about if the ball is getting returned back to the players quick enough! I have supervised the ball boys and girls for over 20 seasons now and I still look forward to every game as if it was my first.”

Lisa Bell, from Newcastle United Foundation, who coordinates the ball boys and girls commented: “Sue and Gail have a huge responsibility on a match day, looking after 22 very excited boys and girls aged 8-15 years old which is never an easy task! They do a brilliant job every game and provide hugely important support for the Foundation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gail and Sue for their dedication to their role, which they do so well.”
