Foundation Family Learning Celebration Brings Football Families Together
Newcastle United Foundation enjoyed a night of celebration as families who took part in our Family Football Programme gathered at St. James’ Park.
The event saw more than three hundred adults and children visit the ground to celebrate their achievements.
Each child who attended the event received a certificate on stage presented by representatives from both the Men’s and Women’s team including Owen Bailey, Michael Newberry, Victor Fernandez and Michaela Raine. A number of awards were also presented including: Family of the Year, Child Learner of the Year, Adult Learner of the Year and School of the Year.
Participants also had the opportunity to enter a raffle with three main prizes being won on the night; a signed Newcastle United shirt, a signed ball, and two match tickets for the Magpies’ games against Manchester United.
Not that the awards were the only highlight. A variety of activities were available to keep families entertained including visitors from GAME Newcastle, Beamish Museum, and Match Attax, as well as face painting, PS4 games, a penalty shootout zone, and even a visit from the Sky Bet Championship Trophy.
The night was capped off by free mini stadium tours for all the families who attended.
Vijay, a parent who took part in the programme with his family, said: ‘I loved it from start to finish, it’s been the best part of my day. I’m really proud to be a part of this and we would love the opportunity to come back again and take part in another one of these events.’
Winter, who took part in the programme with her father, added: ‘I’ve really enjoyed it. Especially the physical side of family football. The stadium tour was really cool!’
The Family Football Programme is a six week course designed to engage adults and children to learn together through football. Its main aim is to help create stronger, healthier families through working together both in the classroom and on the sports field.
The programme is largely funded by the Big Lottery Fund, which has given £300,000 to the Foundation split over three years. As a result the Family Football programme has been able to make a huge impact, working with 2160 parents and children in 2016/17.
Adam Herczeg, Senior Project Officer at the Foundation, said: ‘It’s been a fantastic night celebrating the achievements of all our participants. They’ve all worked extremely hard to complete the programme and the awards tonight are a testament to everything that all the adults and children have done during their time with us.’
