Foundation Case Study – Meet Garylee And Steve
The penultimate case study of our series introduces Garylee Mullen, 18 from Wallsend and Steve Sharp, who delivers Premier League 4 Sport.
Like most Geordies, football was Garylee’s first love but when he found out about a new Premier League 4 Sport Badminton Club at his school he decided to give it a try.
Soon hooked, he attended every session before deciding to take a Level 1 Award in Coaching Badminton so he could volunteer alongside his coach Steve. With Steve’s support he is proving to be an excellent role model and coach to other young people.
From an early age, Garylee showed a passion, talent and a hunger to get ahead. Choosing Tyne Metropolitan College to continue his love of the sport, Garylee, a Level 3 Sports Coaching and Fitness student and part of the college Badminton team, was recently awarded the ‘Young Sports Achievement Award’ which recognises over achievers for their commitment to sports and the community.
Steve Sharp has been a Level 2 Badminton Coach for 10 years and has been coaching on the Premier League 4 Sport project since 2010. As a qualified tutor Steve is also nurturing a new generation of coaches and players.
He said: “Without Newcastle United Foundation and Premier League 4 Sport we would not have found so many talented young players like Garylee. We have also been able to recruit 30 new coaches which is amazing.”
The Foundation runs 32 satellite coaching centres in Judo, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, hockey and tennis as part of Premier League 4 Sport which is funded by Sport England via the Premier League.
