Footballing Families Celebrate Learning Achievements

150 families attended Newcastle United Foundation’s sixth annual Family Football celebration event

150 families from Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland attended Newcastle United Foundation’s fourth annual Family Football celebration event last Friday evening at St James’ Park.

So far this year, the Foundation has delivered 38 Family Football Courses in local schools and community venues. A total of 712 people completed a course or taken part in one of the family learning workshops.

United’s under 18’s goalkeeper, Freddie Woodman and Newcastle- born, Jamie Sterry were in attendance, taking centre-stage to congratulate all participants on their achievements.

Each child attending received a certificate from the Magpies duo, Freddie and Jamie before a series of awards were presented by the VIP guests. Awards were presented to:

Young Learner of the year: Elliot Smith (Burradon Community Primary)

Adult Learner of the year: Barry McGrath (Waterville Primary)

Family of the year: Gabrial and Dean Bell (Richardson Dees Primary)

School of the year: Throckley primary

Emma Smith, mother of the young learner of the year said:

“We would just like to thank everyone at the foundation for making this fantastic experience possible for Elliot.”

Project Coordinator, Mark Bertram commented on the night:

“Our Family Learning Celebration is a flagship event on the Foundation calendar. It is fantastic to celebrate the achievements of every family who has taken part.

“This is our sixth Family Football Celebration event and we are extremely proud of what we have achieved. Our thanks this year go to Newcastle City Learning, Gateshead Council and North Tyneside Council, the Big Lottery Fund and Premier League Charitable Fund plus every school, teacher and family who have participated so far.”

Family Football uses the power of football to bring families together to enjoy learning. The project has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund since 2009 with support from the Premier League since 2013.
