Byker United: Send Us Your Family Memories
Newcastle United Foundation is urging Byker residents to share their family trees, memories and photos as part of their programme Byker United.
Byker United is a one year project delivered by Newcastle United Foundation to tenants and residents within the Byker estate. Through the power of football, Byker United will create opportunities at the heart of the local Byker community, bringing people together and changing lives.
The project will highlight the pride that residents feel about the area, enhance a sense of community across the Byker estate, promote active and healthy lifestyles and inspire young people and families to learn to reach their potential.
A community genealogy project, which will be open to all age groups, will encourage people to identify with their heritage and share findings with fellow residents.
Byker United activities will also include a heritage project for key stage two pupils in three local primary schools which will explore the history of Newcastle United, who originally played their games in Stanley Street, Byker.
Weekly Kicks football sessions and Family Football courses will take place as well as Match Fit, which is a six week fitness, football and nutrition course to educate young people on the importance of healthy living and to encourage improved self-esteem.
Family Fun Days during the year will provide fun, enjoyable and meaningful activity days for families bringing local Byker residents together.
The project aims to create pathways for residents in order for them to reach their potential and encourage a greater sense of cultural identity. Byker United will help residents identify areas they are interested in and offer pathways to continue development and engagement within the community.
Carl Chater, Newcastle United Foundation Project Officer, said:
“ ‘Byker United’ is a fantastic opportunity for the residents to share their family history with us and for it to form an important part of the programme.
“We hope that lots of families will get involved and send us photos and memories from years gone by. With Newcastle United’s origins so closely linked to Byker we’re really interested in hearing about people’s experiences of football, but their contributions can be about any aspect of life in Byker over the years.”
