Building Futures With Mike Williamson

Newcastle United Defender Mike Williamson today visited a Newcastle United Foundation ‘Building Futures’ session, which is supported by Postcode Community Trust and uses football to inspire young people to reach their full potential.

The pupils, aged 12-16 from Woodlawn School in North Tyneside, took the opportunity to quiz Mike about football, as well as showing off some of the skills they have learnt in the sessions at The Parks.

‘Building Futures’ is a one year project that breaks down barriers to sports participation faced by people in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland, as well as developing their skills, confidence and motivation to achieve goals for life.

The project aims to encourage communities to feel proud of their local area and build a sense of community between people from different backgrounds. Breaking down barriers through the power of football will help develop socially inclusive communities which in turn, will help to inspire children, young people and their families to learn and reach their potential.

Mike Williamson said: “I’ve really enjoyed coming down to the session today. It’s great to see just how passionate the participants are about football and how that can play a major role in encouraging them to set goals and work hard to achieve them. I’m really impressed by the work that the Foundation does in the Community – to engage with 50,000 people every year is no mean feat and I’m very glad to have met some of the beneficiaries today.”

Newcastle United Foundation Programme Manager, Andrew Foster, said: “We’re really grateful to Mike for taking the time to come and see ‘Building Futures’ in action. The support from the Postcode Community Trust means that over the next year the project will engage with over 500 children with disabilities at 32 SEN schools and over 1200 young people through Kicks. It’s so fantastic to see how well the participants are progressing and to see how much more confident they are, even after just a few sessions.”
